In pre-Christian times, people practiced the custom of putting food at the graves, or setting a place at the table for those loved ones who had passed, at such times of the year when the spirits of the dead were believed to roam their familiar earthly places.  The month of November was one of those seasons, and the ancient custom has continued into the Christian era in honor of the holy souls.  From this came the practice of baking special breads (All Soul’s Bread, or Bread of the Dead, for November 2nd, the Feast of All Souls, following Halloween).
